Game Review: The Last Campfire

Every once in a while, a game comes along that feels less like a challenge and more like an invitation. The Last Campfire is one of those rare titles — a gentle puzzle adventure that draws you in with quiet charm, soft storytelling, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to stay a little longer than planned.

If you’re searching for a cozy puzzle game that feels gentle without being boring, emotional without being too heavy, and thoughtful but not too challenging, this game is a perfect pick for your next cozy gaming session.

Developed by Hello Games, The Last Campfire is a free-form adventure-based puzzle game where you guide the protagonist, Ember, through a strange, dreamlike world filled with lost Forlorn.

Each Forlorn carries their own forgotten stories, where you must search through the memories they are lost in to help bring them back to reality. Helping them means solving puzzles that range from environmental interaction, object manipulation, and simple logic sequences.

Outside of these puzzle spaces, exploration plays a big role. The game gives you freedom to wander, revisit areas, and discover interactable objects tucked around the map.

The game will take you around 5 to 6 hours to complete, or 8+ hours if you are aiming for a completionist run (includes getting all trophies or achievements).

At the heart of The Last Campfire is the idea that everyone can lose their way sometimes. The Forlorn represent characters who have become stuck in moments of fear, doubt, or uncertainty, and the game treats these experiences with a surprising amount of sensitivity.

Instead of turning them into dramatic plot points, it presents them as quiet emotional pauses, the kind of feelings people often sit with but don’t always know how to move through. Ember’s role is not to “fix” them, but to understand what they’re struggling with and guide them forward.

The structure of this game is very approachable. You’re not juggling complicated mechanics or systems, but there’s enough variety that each new Forlorn feels like its own small challenge with a clear purpose.

The storytelling and slow burn of the game encourage curiosity more than speed, and it’s easy to settle into a comfortable rhythm as you move between exploring and puzzle solving.

  • Revisit areas after solving a few puzzles. A second pass often reveals routes or Forlorn you didn’t notice before.
  • Focus on the puzzle that blocks the main path. Those usually teach the core mechanics for the whole area.
  • Test interactions from multiple angles. If Ember can touch or move something, it usually has more than one purpose.
  • If you’re stuck, reset your approach instead of forcing it. The simplest solution is almost always the correct one.
  • Hidden paths blend into the environment, so scan for small gaps or routes that curve behind objects. If something looks slightly out of place, it’s probably intentional.
  • Looking to complete the game 100%? Check out this completion guide to help you out!

I would rate this game 4.5 out of 5 stars. I loved everything from the storytelling to the puzzles themselves.

The only thing I wish for is a better mapping system in the game, as I often found myself getting lost.

You can play The Last Campfire on Steam, Switch, and the iOS and Android app stores.

I’ve played some of The Last Campfire!! I really enjoyed what I played, but I felt like I wasn’t in the right headspace for it (it’s so pensive and that wasn’t the vibe I was going for at the time).

Your post makes me want to revisit it, thanks!!
